Recent owner reports: Service Brakes

“One Driver + one Passenger. Pulled into parking spot very slowly. Vehicle was moving about 1 mph, ready to pull to a stop, still in Drive. Vehicle suddenly surged forward with incredible energy and noise. Vehicle sped off parking lot and ascended steep ~6-foot berm of forest soil (no boulders). Driver applied brake, but it would not work. Driver later reported many red light warning indicators on the dash.”

NHTSA complaint, filed 10/10/2026

“1. Brake System Failure-Recurring dashboard warnings including “Brake Power Low” and “Secondary Collision Brake System Malfunction.” Warnings have appeared multiple times, including while towing a travel trailer. The vehicle was diagnosed with related fault codes (including DTC C138071 – Stop Lamp Relay). The problem returned after a dealer service visit.”

NHTSA complaint, filed 08/03/2026

“Active Technical Service Bulletin that was not disclosed by Toyota or my dealer. The brakes make a piercing metal on metal noise when placed in reverse. I've been told this is not a safety issue, there will be no longer term impacts, and it is safe to drive. The issue however is that Toyota is limiting distribution of available repair parts, so I am on a 5-6 month wait list with my dealer.”
